Block9/Birmingham Opera Company - Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk

Working with Block9, Surely designed two bespoke fabric patterns that referenced the bold patterns commonly seen in West African Wax printed fabrics and included details from the opera's storyline about the the murderous Lady Macbeth. The patterns were digitally printed and made into costumes for the immersive production of Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by award-winning opera director Graham Vick with The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, which was staged in the disused Tower Ballroom, a former nightclub and wedding venue on the outskirts of Edgbaston, Birmingham.

"It’s a nice touch that Block 9’s eclectic costume designs have her initially dressed in West African-style fabrics with gaudy prints of fungus and rodents – her first victim, her father-in-law, will be seen off in the kitchen with rat poison in his mushroom stew"
